オキナワウラジロガシ群生地とは

オキナワウラジロガシ(沖縄裏白樫)は日本の固有種の樫であり、ちょうど10年ほど前に大和村の大和浜・オキナワウロジロガシ群生林は国の天然記念物に指定されました。 こちらのオキナワウロジロガシについて端的に説明するには「日本最大のドングリ」を産み出す樹木といえばいいでしょう。

奄美空港や沖縄の那覇空港などのお土産コーナーにある大きなドングリのアクセサリーがこの樹木のドングリなのです。

ウラジロガシとも雑交配されているのが近年見つかったようですが、こちらは普通サイズです。

オキナワウロジロガシは二年生のドングリで落ちているものを拾う時に見かけると思いますが葉からして大きいですから、記念に拾う時は葉とのワンセットでもいいでしょう。 大和村の村役場前に案内看板が出ていますので、そちらを参考に斜面を登っていきましょう。

大和村は奄美大島の中央部にありますが、奄美空港からはレンタカーで80分程度で到着します。

駐車場はないですので役場に許可を貰って駐車させてもらうのがベストです。 天気の変わりやすい奄美大島で群生地までは急勾配ですので、雨の場合は特に足元への配慮をするのが得策です。
