◆マテリヤの名の由来

滝までの細い山道は周りに木が生い茂っているため、昼間でも薄暗く感じます。ただ、薄暗い山道を歩いていると急に空の開けた場所があり、そこに陽の光に輝く滝壺が現れます。

その光と水の幻想的な美しさから、『マテリヤ・ヌ・コモリ』(本当に美しい太陽の滝壺)と名付けられます。

滝自体はそれほど大きくありませんが、落ちる水の量が多く、マイナスイオンに満たされます。また、滝の風景のもの静かさが、オアシスを感じさせます。

なお、マテリヤの滝に向かう途中で、思勝湾の絶景を望むこともできます。

マテリヤの滝での遊び方

マテリヤの滝のある奄美フォレストポリス森林公園では、キャンプ場やアスレチックがあり、奄美大島の自然を満喫できます。

◆アクセス

大和村役場から県道79号線を宇検村方面へ走ります。毛陣トンネルを抜けると、左手に看板が見えてきます。山道には分岐道がありますが、看板が立っているので迷うことはありません。

駐車場から滝までは徒歩5分程度です。
