Indoor Experience

I had tried this on my previous visit to Amami Oshima, and since I wanted to create a different design this time, I decided to do it again. What I find fascinating about mud dyeing is how the color gradually deepens with each repeated step—it never fails to surprise me, no matter how many times I do it. The staff were kind enough to guide me through the process, and once again, I ended up with a T-shirt I’m really happy with.

First, at the workshop, we received a detailed explanation of the history and techniques of mud dyeing and indigo dyeing. Next, we put on aprons and tried our hand at the actual process of dyeing T-shirts. As we repeated the process of dipping the fabric into the dye and kneading it in, the excitement of watching the fabric gradually take on a deep color was truly special (I was sweating!). The finished T-shirts had a wonderful, distinctive look, and it was an experience that left me completely satisfied.

Although I was there alone, the staff were friendly and chatted with me, so I was able to enjoy the dyeing experience without feeling lonely. Amami’s traditional mud dyeing is a deeply intricate art, and I spent a luxurious amount of time completely absorbed in watching my T-shirt gradually take on color. I ended up with a T-shirt that’s one of a kind, making it a wonderful memento of my solo trip.

The private natural hot spring and wood-fired sauna were absolutely amazing. The cold plunge really helped me recharge, and it completely washed away all my daily fatigue. This was definitely the right choice.
