What is Dorozome?

The tannin acid pigment contained in the rosebay (a plant of the rose family) and iron (ferric oxide) in the muddy field are chemically bonded more than 85 times on the protein of the silk threads, resulting in a deep, lustrous, austere black color with a strong colorfastness (the color does not fade).

Amami OshimaTraditional Dyeing Techniquesand is characterized by being combined with "mud dyeing".
On Amami Oshima Island, indigo dyeing made from a plant called Ryukyu indigo and mud dyeing using iron-rich mud are used together to produce a unique deep coloring.
The material to be dyed is made with rubber or clips to create an undyed area, and after being dyed several times with teche tree juice or lime water, it is dyed in a muddy field.

I was able to dye my own T-shirts by hand, and each step of the process was new to me. In particular, the final dyeing process using Amami's unique mud was a valuable experience that I could not have had anywhere else. What was particularly impressive was that we went outside and got into the actual mud with our boots, and soaked my T-shirt in the mud. It seems they used to use the same method in the old days, I was deeply moved by the fact that the same dyeing method is still used today. The finished product was very beautiful. I would like you to experience this when you come to Amami.
