What is Dorozome?

Only on Amami Oshima Island in the world.It is a natural dyeing method used in
The tannin acid pigment contained in the rosebay (a plant of the rose family) and iron (ferric oxide) in the muddy field are chemically bonded more than 85 times on the protein of the silk threads, resulting in a deep, lustrous, austere black color with a strong colorfastness (the color does not fade).

I had tried this on my previous visit to Amami Oshima, and since I wanted to create a different design this time, I decided to do it again. What I find fascinating about mud dyeing is how the color gradually deepens with each repeated step—it never fails to surprise me, no matter how many times I do it. The staff were kind enough to guide me through the process, and once again, I ended up with a T-shirt I’m really happy with.

First, at the workshop, we received a detailed explanation of the history and techniques of mud dyeing and indigo dyeing. Next, we put on aprons and tried our hand at the actual process of dyeing T-shirts. As we repeated the process of dipping the fabric into the dye and kneading it in, the excitement of watching the fabric gradually take on a deep color was truly special (I was sweating!). The finished T-shirts had a wonderful, distinctive look, and it was an experience that left me completely satisfied.

Although I was there alone, the staff were friendly and chatted with me, so I was able to enjoy the dyeing experience without feeling lonely. Amami’s traditional mud dyeing is a deeply intricate art, and I spent a luxurious amount of time completely absorbed in watching my T-shirt gradually take on color. I ended up with a T-shirt that’s one of a kind, making it a wonderful memento of my solo trip.

It was a valuable opportunity to experience traditional techniques, and it was fascinating to watch the T-shirt gradually take on color. The workshop went very smoothly. The mud-dyeing process was more authentic than I expected, and it was fascinating to watch the color gradually change. I’m also happy with how the T-shirt turned out. However, since my hands got a little dirty, it would have been perfect if I’d had a little more time to wash them.

It was my first time to dye and I was worried that I would not be able to do it well, but the staff carefully taught me how to do it and even a beginner could make a beautiful T-shirt. A NAVI search of the phone number showed a location far from the airport, but we found it along the national highway and arrived safely. We enjoyed working with a female designer who came all the way from Canada just for the dyeing experience. On a separate day from weaving We also had a mud-dyeing experience! I learned how to do it like this, I was able to learn how to do this, and it was a truly unique and personal work of art. It was a wonderful memory for me. The staff were very attentive and taught me how to do the work. I was able to work with ease. I was thrilled when I removed the elastic and other parts! This plan to experience mud and indigo dyeing, the traditional techniques of Amami Oshima, is a wonderful activity that can be enjoyed even on rainy days. I had a mud-dyeing experience. The staff was polite and kind in their explanations, I enjoyed the experience. What was particularly impressive was that we went outside and got into the actual mud with our boots, and soaked my T-shirt in the mud. It seems they used to use the same method in the old days, I was deeply moved by the fact that the same dyeing method is still used today. The finished product was very beautiful. I would like you to experience this when you come to Amami.
