What is Saigo Nanshu's exile site?

On Amami Oshima Island, the residence of Saigo Takamori (Saigo Nanshu) when he was exiled to the island remains as "Tataketo Ato" (the site of his exile). This facility is owned by the descendants of Saigo's wife, Aikana, who lived on Amami Oshima.

Stone monument
As you enter the site of the exile, you will see a stone monument in front of the building. This stone monument was placed by Kaishu Katsu, and it bears his inscription, which is unreadable due to weathering over the years. However, a guide book containing the inscription is available.

● Deportation to the exile
At the back of the building is the two-storied exile room where Saigou lived, which is now open to the public and used as a museum. In the room, Saigo's career and Aikana's life are introduced, and a calligraphy of Saigo's hand is hung (it is a masterpiece).

You will also be given an account of Saigo's life in Amami by the current owner of the house. You will learn many stories that you cannot hear in history programs, and get a glimpse of the real Saigo.
