宇宿貝塚とは

宇宿貝塚は昭和61年に奄美で初めての国指定史跡となった場所です。
貝塚だけではなく、縄文時代晩期終末期の竪穴式住居跡やそれらの遺骸、土器や石器、骨格器などが発掘されています。
面白いの中世の埋葬跡が見つかったことでしょう、学校の授業では竪穴式住居は縄文時代から弥生時代中期が最盛期と習いますが、実際には平安時代まで建てられていた地域も少なくないと言えます。
これらの貴重な遺跡の発掘調査跡をまるごと建物内に保存しているのが、現在の宇宿貝塚史跡公園なのです。
アクセス方法としては奄美空港から車で5分程度の場所ですが、市街地からは車で50分程度かかります。
このため奄美空港を利用する機会の折りに足を運んでみるのが得策であるといえるでしょう。
