What is Uyado Shell Mound?
Ushuku Shell Mound was the first place in Amami to be designated as a national historic site in 1986.
In addition to shell middens, pit dwelling sites and their remains, earthenware, stone tools, and skeletal remains from the Late Jomon Period have also been excavated.
In school classes, we learn that pit dwellings were built from the Jomon to the mid-Yayoi period, but in fact, many areas were built until the Heian period.
The excavation sites of these valuable ruins are preserved in their entirety in the building that is now the Ujuku Shell Mound Historic Site Park.
As for access, the location is a 5-minute drive from Amami Airport, but it takes about 50 minutes by car from the city center.
Therefore, it is a good idea to visit Amami Airport when you have a chance to use it.
