I took part in a trekking tour of the Kinzakuhara Primeval Forest. The certified guide provided detailed explanations, and I learned a great deal about Amami’s natural environment. I appreciated that the course was easy enough for even beginners to walk without any trouble. If I had to mention one thing, it was a bit slippery underfoot right after the rain, so it would have been perfect if there had been a reminder about proper footwear beforehand.

I recently signed up for Slow Guide Amami’s Kinzakuhara trekking tour and was completely satisfied! I used several tour companies during this trip, but Slow Guide Amami was outstanding from start to finish—from their wealth of knowledge and engaging tour leadership that kept participants entertained, to their ability to monitor the movements of other tour groups while providing explanations and ensuring ample time for photos. Kinsakuhara is a primeval forest that embodies the essence of Amami and is packed with highlights. If you’re not confident in your physical fitness, just let the guide know, and they’ll adjust the route accordingly. There’s a steep flight of about 40 steps at the very end deep in the forest, but other than that, the hike isn’t too strenuous. You can also choose to wait without descending the stairs. I recommend wearing long pants and sneakers, especially if it’s just rained, as you may have to walk through muddy areas. Slow Guide Amami was very attentive, calling to confirm details the day before and even before my arrival. While there are many tour companies in Amami, I highly recommend Slow Guide Amami. If I ever visit Amami again, I’d like to sign up for their night tours or canoe tours as well.

The 3-hour tour includes a 1-hour round-trip travel time to Kanasakihara, so the actual walking time is 2 hours. You’ll walk about 1.5 km round-trip on a wide, nearly flat path covered with gravel. I took a photo with a large hego palm in the background, so it served as a nice souvenir. It’s true that I felt a bit disappointed because I had expected too much from a tour that promised a walk through virgin forest. For those looking for a mountain hike, this might not be satisfying enough, so a longer tour that goes deeper into the wilderness might be a better choice.

It was truly the highlight of my trip to Amami Oshima. Walking through the forest after the rain while listening to the fun commentary, it didn't take long at all. On the way back home, we were lucky enough to see a black-crowned night heron by chance.

Sorry for the delay in posting. Thank you for the great time we had on the day. I chose this one out of many plans because The price is cheaper than others. No cancellation fee until the day before. The meeting place is easy to find. I was not confident about my physical strength because I do not exercise regularly, so I decided to take a short course. If you can't miss the World Heritage site of Kinsaku-gara, but you don't want to spend more than half a day there, this is the perfect choice. The plants you can't see anywhere else are so exciting. The only bird I saw was a red-winged blackbird for a moment (but it was enough to see it). The beautiful chirping of wild birds throughout the tour was soothing and relaxing. I could also hear the drumming sound of an Austen's woodpecker. There were also newts and a rufous-necked ferret. The rest of the ladies didn't know that a narcissus was an insect, or didn't know what it looked like? I was a bit surprised to see them. It was so extremely thin that I could not distinguish the antennae or the head. I mean, how could they live with this? Both creatures are impossible without a guide. It used to be that anyone could come and go freely, but if I had been exploring on my own, I would have just thought, "Wow, this is amazing vegetation," and would have ended up not noticing anything. The guide is limited to 9 people per car, so if you are in the back of the line for a long time, you won't be able to hear him. They also take a lot of pictures. They will give you free data later. Don't worry, the parking lot at the sports park is paved and spacious, unlike the one in the photo. Oh, I heard there are no mountain lions. It had rained the day before, but there was almost no muddiness and the temperature was just right. The photo at the turnaround point (the tallest tree) is a highlight of the walk. However, if you do it in the rain, you might want to wear a sun visor with a transparent brim on top of a raincoat, because you will be looking up directly at the top of the tree, and you will probably get showered in the face.

We had a great time walking while learning more about the nature of Amami. On the way, we found eggs and tadpoles of Amami tip-nosed frogs in a small puddle, and a nanafushi, which made us feel closer to the rich nature. Thank you very much for the guide, Mr. Tomioka.

Although the tour was short, I was able to experience the atmosphere of a virgin forest. The explanations about the mosses and plants underfoot were very detailed and gave us perspectives that we would not have noticed if we had just walked through the forest.

I went with my parents in their late 70s in late November using the charter option. They wanted to go to Kinsakubara, but they were a little anxious about walking and their faces were a little clouded. We told them the day before, and they prepared sticks and portable chairs for us, slowed down the walking speed and took breaks, and their expressions changed with the plan and Yoneda's exciting guiding and gentle concern. It was a great time to learn about the unique flora and fauna of Oshima, its culture and world heritage. Above all, the natural beauty of the island was beautiful and pleasant. It was such a fun and wonderful tour that I felt like leaving Ms. Yoneda on the way home (^^). My parents are not too tired after the tour, so I think this tour is recommended for people in their 70s.

We joined the afternoon tour on 12/4. We were picked up at our hotel at 13:20 and trekked for 2 hours starting at about 14:00. It was a pleasant trek to experience nature that we cannot usually feel and to be bathed in negative ions. Our guide, Mr. Tomioka, taught us a lot of things and we learned a lot. Thank you very much. We were very comfortable because we were dropped off at the hotel at the end of the tour.

I had my 6 year old with me and the guide was very attentive and we enjoyed the tour to the end. He explained the plants and creatures in an easy-to-understand way, allowing us to observe them more deeply. He also took pictures, which we were able to have later! The people we shared the tour with were kind and helpful. I would definitely ask them to take another tour in Amami next time I am in the area.

The guide was friendly and we had a great time trekking and talking with fellow tour members. The tour was reasonably priced, with hotel pick-up and drop-off (in the Naze area), and we could apply for the tour from only one person, so it was quite good!

Amami/3 hours] I joined a trekking tour to be healed by nature in the Kinsaku primeval forest. The guide in charge, Mr. Yoneda, was very kind and told us a lot about Amami Oshima and we had a great time. We were blessed with good weather and enjoyed the trekking. The frogs and lizards we met on the island were cute and healing! The pictures we received later were wonderful and made for great memories.
