    What is Mt.

The highest peak on Amami Oshima is Yuwan-dake (694 meters above sea level), which can be called the sacred mountain of Amami.
There is a tradition that Amami Oshima began when Sinirek and Amamiko landed on this land, probably because of the mystique of the highest peak.
The entire summit area is designated as a special protected area in Amami Islands National Park.
This is because it is the habitat of valuable endemic species of the Amami and Nansei Islands, including the well-known Amami rabbit.
There are two climbing routes, one from Yamato Village and the other from Ugan Village, but if you choose the traditional route, we recommend taking the 50-minute walk from the trailhead at the Ywan-dake Observatory in Ugan Village.
On the other hand, if you are looking for convenience by car, it takes about 20 minutes from Amami Forest Park to reach the trailhead.
The route from the trailhead to the top takes about 15 minutes.
Whichever you choose, it is essential to remember to prepare rain gear, as Amami Oshima Island has a lot of precipitation.
