湯湾岳展望台公園は、奄美大島でもっとも標高の高い山で約694ｍの高さがあります。この山頂に設けられた展望台周辺が公園として整備されているスポットです。現地では古来より神話の舞台として語り伝えられている霊峰として、信仰の対象となっている山でもあります。

山中には奄美固有の動植物が多数みられ、国の天然記念物で且つ固定公園特別保護地区ともなっています。湯湾岳展望台公園は、大和村と宇検村にまたがる一にあり、名瀬からは車で凡そ135分の距離となっています。奄美大島最高峰の山に知己、展望台からは眼下に島の雄大な風景をパノラマで干渉できる絶好のビューポイントとなっています。山頂への登山道は2つ有りますが、ハブなどには注意が必要です。
