Tanaka Isson was born in Tochigi and lived in Chiba City for 20 years before moving to Amami Oshima. He continued to paint Japanese-style paintings of subtropical plants and birds, but never had the opportunity to publish his work during his lifetime.
In the 1980s, Tanaka Isson was introduced in a TV art program and became well known throughout Japan. The Tanaka Isson Museum of Art, which houses many of Isson Tanaka's paintings, is located in the Amami Park near the airport.
