There are three ways to get from Amami Airport to central Amami Oshima: rental car, cab, and bus.
The most convenient way to access the central part of Amami Oshima is by rental car. You can freely move from the airport to the central area and natural spots.
Be careful when driving, as there are some areas, such as mangrove forests in the central and southern part of Amami-Oshima, where GPS does not respond.
There are waiting cars at the airport and port, and cabs are relatively easy to catch since Nase is the center of Amami Oshima.
If you need access to a location away from the downtown area, contact a cab company.
Although there are only a few services, it covers the entire Amami Oshima Island and is the only public transportation system on Amami Oshima. There are also tickets for unlimited rides on local buses.
An airport shuttle bus runs from Amami Airport.
Naze, located in the central part of Amami Oshima, is the busiest and central part of Amami Oshima.
It is recommended as a travel base because of its harbor and dense concentration of restaurants and accommodations.

In the central part of Amami-Oshima, you can enjoy spots where you can see the beautiful sea of Amami-Oshima, such as Miyakozaki where you can overlook the East China Sea and Ohama Seaside Park which is famous for its sunset view.
The central part of Amami Oshima Island is home to the island's most popular sightseeing spot, the Kinsaku Primeval Forest, and the second largest mangrove in Japan, where trekking and canoeing tours can be enjoyed.
Moving south from Naze, there is much unspoiled nature.

We took this tour as part of our anniversary trip with my wife. The veteran guide’s commentary wasn’t just a simple explanation—it was filled with such deep love for Amami’s nature that we were completely captivated. The silence of the green tunnel as we paddled the canoe in perfect sync became the most memorable part of our trip.
Since I was traveling alone, I was a little nervous at first, but the certified guide chatted with me in a friendly manner the entire way, so I never had a moment to feel lonely. The primeval forest, overgrown with massive Hikagehego trees so tall you have to look up to see the tops, is far more majestic and awe-inspiring in person than in any photo. I was also very grateful that the round-trip transportation was included, which eliminated any travel stress.
The slow pace of island life in this traditional village, combined with the atmosphere of the sacred sites that have been carefully preserved, made my heart feel instantly lighter... The guide’s gentle way of speaking made me feel as though I had stepped into a story steeped in history, even though I was just walking through the town... It completely healed the fatigue of everyday life... Thank you for such a wonderful time...
It was my first time in Amami, and I was really nervous about driving on mountain roads and such, but the staff member who picked me up was so kind and patient in answering my questions about the routes that I felt at ease right away! The car itself was spotlessly clean and comfortable, and thanks to the reliable navigation system, I was able to navigate the narrow village roads with ease. Thanks to them, I had a wonderful time without any accidents. I’ll definitely use this service again next time!
Since we had the tour all to ourselves, we were able to take our time and fully enjoy the scenery we wanted to see without worrying about the pace of the other groups. The guide’s explanations of the plants and wildlife were also very interesting, making it a truly rewarding experience. The view as we passed through the mangrove tunnel was absolutely breathtaking. If I had to nitpick, it would have been perfect if there had been a simple freshwater tap where we could quickly rinse our hands and feet after getting out of the canoe. Overall, I was very satisfied with the tour itself.
No matter where I drove, the coastline was picture-perfect, and I was excited the whole time! The rental car was nimble and easy to drive, and thanks to the GPS, I was able to find my way to a beautiful sunset spot without getting lost. The airport transfer was also incredibly smooth and a huge help☆ I highly recommend this to anyone who wants to enjoy Amami’s great outdoors by car♪
